INTRODUCTION

Accuracy, repeatability, resolution and stability are terms that are often confused. This sheet aims to provide definitions of these terms.

Accuracy

Accuracy describes how close the mean result is to the reference value.

Positioning Definitions - Accuracy & Repeatability

Repeatability

Repeatability describes the variation between results. It is often expressed as a standard deviation.

Positioning Definitions - Probability Density

Resolution

The resolution of a system is equal to the smallest incremental step that can be made.

Positioning Definitions - Resolution

Stability

The stability of a system is the maximum deviation from a constant reference value over a long time (typically >10 seconds). When specifying the stability, the corresponding timescale has to be specified as well.
